Pest nudged his best friend, Verm. “Hey, you see that huge stone wall over there? See that little crack about halfway up?”
Verm craned his head and looked. “Yeah, so what?”
“That’s the secret entrance to the Land of Giants.”
“How do you know?”
“That’s what my brother Soar said. And he knows!”
“Oh yeah, how does he know?”
“Cause he’s seen them walking around out here before!”
“Huh-uh! Here?” Verm looked around in fear.
“Yep. Let’s go through it. I want to see the secret world of Giants.”
“No way. My cousin Glide said nobody comes back alive!”
“What are you, scared?” sneered Pest. Pest was his nickname. His brother Soar started calling him that forever ago and it stuck.
“I’m no more scared than you are!”
“Then let’s go!”
They both started buzzing with excitement. Carefully they moved toward the crack. It wasn’t very wide but they managed to squeeze through. It was pitch black but they kept going forward. Their little hearts pounded as they kept going. Eventually, they saw a dim light ahead which slowly became brighter as they got closer.
Finally, they reached the end of the tunnel. The light was bright as the sun! And right in front of them was a giant! It must have been a million times bigger than they were combined! As they left the tunnel, they were talking excitedly and the giant must have heard them.
It turned its big ugly head left and then right, looking for the source of the sound. Pest was elbowing Verm to shut up, but Verm was chattering a mile-a-minute with excitement. Finally the giant focused its huge eyes on them and then slowly, ponderously swung its claw in their direction. The behemoth was so slow! Verm darted left and Pest went right. By the time the giant’s paw smacked where they’d been, they were long gone. Verm was now over his fear and laughing at the slow-moving, ponderous giant. He started winging it and moved around, back and forth in front of the giant. Pest caught the spirit as well.
It seemed like they could move a thousand times faster than the mammoth creature! They started flitting around, even jumping on the giant’s foot or paws after it swung. One time, Pest was on its claw and the giant tried to smack him with its other paw. Pest zipped away and the giant smacked itself with a loud whap! Oh, that made it mad and it snarled in anger! Pest and Verm laughed and laughed.
Then suddenly it was a disaster. Verm zigged and Pest zagged and they ran into each other! The giant paw caught both of them at the same time and smashed them to the ground. As they lay there, broken and dying, the last thing they heard was the roar of triumph from the giant as it said, “Welcome to the room where flies come to die!”
