One of my sons would like to go to West Point. One of the obstacles I see for him and we talk about often is how he manages his time.

I picked him up from school today and he was talking about how much homework he has to do this evening. It did sound like a large amount.

“Okay, let’s think this through. You know you have weightlifting (for football) at five and that lasts about two hours. So when we get home, maybe you don’t need to take 45 minutes for a snack while watching two episodes of Impractical Jokers, 45 minute bathroom break, then come home from lifting for an hour dinner and then an hour+ shower, and then start your homework at 10 o’clock. What do you think?”

Unintelligible grunt / murmur / muttering.

“Look, son, as an Army officer you’ll make decisions all day, every day. Some big, some small. The more you get right, the better you’ll do in your career. It’s the same for a cadet. Setting priorities, which by the way, is a key leadership thing, is all about making decisions. It starts with the ones you make for yourself, to take care of your personal business.
