Sometimes life throws you a curve ball.

My curveball yesterday. Photo by author.

No bloodshed. No injuries. Totaled car. My little Nissan gave its life for mine. I felt like a cowboy whose horse gives its last breath getting him out of danger but dies succeeding.

I’m not a car guy and I really don’t develop much emotional attachment to vehicles. That little car saw me through some tough times. Never had any problems until it expired yesterday giving me its last full measure of devotion.

Another vehicle turned left from the right lane with a small trailer on the back. I did NOT expect it and veered enough to only clip the trailer. His pickup truck wasn’t damaged but the four-wheeler on the trailer was a little scuffed up.

I was traveling to do some work for my mom. She has a rental house she’s preparing to sell. Actually, I’m prepping it to sell with some help from a couple of contractors.

This could have been so, so much worse. But it wasn’t. What’s more, other than painfully inconvenient, it was a non-event. And that’s how I decided to treat it. Got it towed, reported to the insurance company, and gave a prayer of thanks. Then, I went and painted the basement I was planning to paint. Because it needed done.

I suspect it was because I was on a mission to help my mother that enabled me to keep moving. I’ve often said that we’re strongest in service to others. I believe it and have for a long time. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to practice it.

That was my leadership moment today.
