Two of my relatives, both female and in their mid- to late-forties, have lupus and a host of other health issues. Their postings on Facebook tell very different stories.

Many people with lupus go through times when they feel reasonably well and other times when they feel horrible. I also acknowledge that comparing people’s medical conditions is imperfect and seldom useful. It’s extremely difficult to know what another person is experiencing or how it feels to them. Given that, I still cannot help myself comparing the two.

One of them posts pictures of herself at her worst. She looks as terrible as she must feel. Her comments on the pictures beg for sympathy and pity. She often despairs of all the things she cannot do, how difficult it is for others to understand what she’s going through, and her personal misery.

The other rarely if ever shares anything about her medical condition. Her account is full of good times with her family, friends, and travel. She seems in complete denial of her limitations and…
